How Coco Chanel revolutionized women’s fashion?
In the 1920s, Gabrielle Chanel wanted to join the revolution in women’s fashion. She replaces the traditional corset with the comfort and elegance of a simple dress or suit. She provided women with practical and subdued clothing, creating flowing garments, shortening skirts, and popularizing jersey, a light fabric used for underwear. His style is sophisticated but color is neutral.
She introduced Rodier jerseys, tweeds, uniform buttons and trims, cardigans, costumes her jewelry, women’s trousers and short hairwear to the collection.
Chanel became particularly famous for the Little Black Dress (1926) and the perfume Chanel No.5.
How did the little black dress become a luxury standard?
Coming out, the little black dress causes excitement. The original dress has long sleeves and short knee-length. The melancholic color of mourning associated with visible legs, causes scandal. Its striking simplicity creates an understated luxury. Vogue dubbed it “The Ford of Chanel”.
In the 1940s, a little black dress with a pearl necklace became the uniform of the bourgeoisie.
Many couturiers have been inspired, including Givenchy who dressed Audrey Hepburn in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and Yves Saint Laurent who dressed Catherine Deneuve for French films.
Karl Lagerfeld (Fendi) said about this dress that it was a basis for style because no one ever dresses up nor overdresses with it.
“Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street. Fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” – Coco Chanel
