HERMÈS, the strength of the origins
A Sporting life
Hermès was established in 1837. It specializes in leather, lifestyle accessories, home furnishings, perfumery, jewellery, watches and ready-to-wear.
From the 1930s, Hermès employed Swiss watchmaker Universal Geneva as the brand’s first and exclusive designer of timepieces. In 2019, the brand was ranked 33rd in the Forbes List “World’s Most Valuable Brands”.
What is Hermès’ brand philosophy?
Known for its luxury goods, Hermès has 14 product divisions covering leather, scarves, ties, men’s and women’s wear, perfumes, watches, stationery, shoes, gloves, enamels, decorative arts, tableware, and jewelry.
The firm sticks to its traditional business model, rejecting mass production, assembly lines, and mechanization. Hermès’s products are almost entirely handmade in France in medium-sized workshops known as “Les Ateliers Hermès” with an emphasis on quality craftsmanship.
Indeed, Hermès wishes that most items are made from start to finish by just one person to ensure to guarantee the quality and uniqueness of its creations.
What is the history of Hermès?
Thierry Hermès was born in Krefeld, Germany, to a French father and a German mother. The family moved to France in 1828. In 1837, Hermès first established a harness workshop in the Grands Boulevards quarter of Paris, dedicated to serving European noblemen.
Hermès`s son, Charles-Émile, took over management from his father in 1880 and moved the shop to 24 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, where it remains.
He introduced saddlery and started selling his products retail.
The company supplied elites in Europe, North Africa, Russia, Asia, and the Americas. In 1900, the company offered a bag, specially designed for riders to carry their saddles.
After Charles-Émile Hermès left, his sons Adolphe and Émile-Maurice took leadership and renamed the company Hermès Frères.
In the 1920s, Émile-Maurice added accessories and clothing collections. In 1922, the first leather handbag was introduced after Émile-Maurice’s wife complained of not being able to find one to her liking.
In 1929, his first couture collection for ladies was presented in Paris.
In the 1930s, Hermès produced some of its most famous leather bags, such as his 1935 leather bag “Sac à dépêches” in 1935 (later renamed ‘Kelly bag’ after Grace Kelly).
Émile-Maurice summarized Hermès philosophy as :
“leather, sport, and a tradition of refined elegance“.
