What is the history of Hermès?

Hermès International, a bastion of French luxury, has evolved from a 19th-century harness workshop to a modern symbol of elegance and innovation, deeply rooted in a tradition of craftsmanship and exclusivity.

The Journey of Hermès: From Thierry’s Harness Workshop to Global Luxury Icon

Thierry Hermès was born in Krefeld, Germany, to a French father and a German mother. The family moved to France in 1828. In 1837, Hermès first established a harness workshop in the Grands Boulevards quarter of Paris, dedicated to serving European noblemen.

Hermès`s son, Charles-Émile, took over management from his father in 1880 and moved the shop to 24 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, where it remains.

He introduced saddlery and started selling his products retail.

The company supplied elites in Europe, North Africa, Russia, Asia, and the Americas. In 1900, the company offered a bag, specially designed for riders to carry their saddles.

After Charles-Émile Hermès left, his sons Adolphe and Émile-Maurice took leadership and renamed the company Hermès Frères.

The Evolution of Hermès From 1920s

In the 1920s, Émile-Maurice added accessories and clothing collections. In 1922, the first leather handbag was introduced after Émile-Maurice’s wife complained of not being able to find one to her liking.

In 1929, his first couture collection for ladies was presented in Paris.

Jean-Louis Dumas, joining the firm in 1964, became chairman in 1978. He was instrumental in revitalizing Hermès by focusing on silk, leather goods, and ready-to-wear, blending traditional techniques with innovative product lines. Under his leadership, Hermès also expanded its watch business with La Montre Hermès in Switzerland and gained significant stakes in French glassware and tableware manufacturers, broadening its luxury repertoire

During the late 1990s, Hermès strategically reduced its number of franchised stores while increasing company-owned stores, exerting greater control over its product sales. This strategy, along with investments in new markets like China, contributed significantly to the brand’s growth and prestige
