The Timeless Legacy of Vacheron Constantin: A Swiss Luxury Watchmaking Company
Founded in 1755 by Jean-Marc Vacheron, Vacheron is a Swiss luxury watchmaking company. In 1810, Jacques-Barthélemy Vacheron, Jean-Marc’s grandson, took the helm of the company and launched its first exports to France and Italy.
In 1833, Vacheron hired Georges-Auguste Leschot to oversee its manufacturing operations.
Leschot, an inventor, was instrumental in the company’s success, as he was the first to standardize watch movements in calibers.
In 1844, Leschot received a gold medal from the Geneva Society of Arts. In 1880, the company adopted the Maltese cross as an integral part of its brand logo. The first Vacheron & Constantin boutique opened in Geneva in 1906.
During the Great Depression of 1929, Vacheron’s revenue was divided by five. In 1936, a descendant of the Constantin family, Charles Constantin, took the helm of the company for the first time. In 1938, Vacheron was integrated into the Jaeger-LeCoultre group, but its various companies maintained their independence.
In 1965, Georges Ketterer bought a majority of Vacheron & Constantin’s shares, restoring its complete independence. In 1970, the company simplified its name to Vacheron Constantin.
In 1996, the Richemont Group bought all of Vacheron Constantin’s shares. Vacheron Constantin is a member of the Swiss Watchmaking Industry Federation (FHS).
In 2011, a pocket watch created by the brand in 1918 was sold for $1.76 million at a Christies’s auction in New York. In 2017, Louis Ferla, formerly the company’s Marketing and Commercial Director, replaced Juan-Carlos Torres as the CEO of Vacheron Constantin.
