The establishment of Chopard: a milestone in time
Chopard is a Swiss luxury watch, jewelry and accessory company, founded in 1860 by Louis-Ulysse Chopard. He established a highly precise watchmaking manufacture specializing in pocket watches and chronometers in Sonvilier, Switzerland.
Louis-Ulysse Chopard’s handcrafted watches quickly captivated numerous clients. Ambitious, he saw great prospects in foreign markets and set out to prospect in Eastern Europe, Russia, and Scandinavia. In 1912, he visited Poland, Hungary, and the Netherlands with his finest creations. Chopard chronometers and watches now marked time throughout Europe, particularly at the court of Tsar Nicholas II.
The Chopard manufacture (150 employees) relocated to Geneva in 1937 and ventured into the production of quality watches.
Chopard: a century of timeless elegance
In 1963, with the inheritors having decided to pursue other careers, Paul-André Chopard, the founder’s grandson, sold the manufacture to Karl Scheufele III, heir to the German jewelry empire Eszeha. Under Karl Scheufele III’s leadership, the company acquired significant experience in watchmaking, contributed to the modernization of the house, and added the jewelry segment to Chopard’s watch production.
